Terracotta Fiori Quilt – A Sneak Peak

Dreaming in Sea Glass

Currently, I’m pretending I’m at the beach. Baking in the sun, enjoying the birds as they dance with the waves, breathing in the salty air, thinking about the Terracotta Fiori quilt, and searching for shells as I trek across the sandy shore.

That is where this quilt is taking me… That is what I channeled every time I took a stitch.

I’ve become enamored with solid fabrics — I’m using them more and more in the projects I make. They are so interesting because you are creating your own pallet like this one of sea glass. For it, I chose an assortment of Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cottons and I’m so happy with how it turned out.

If you love these colors too, this is what I used: Leaf, Sweet Mint, Waterfall, Peacock, Pear, and, of course, Riley White. Don’t you think they work well together? They make me feel both calm and playful.

Next Month’s Quilt Pattern

I’ve been busy designing a new pattern that I call Terracotta Fiori, which will be coming out next month. If everything goes right, the release day will be September 17.  (Fingers crossed!) I’m so excited about this pattern that I just couldn’t hold it in any longer.

This is a sneak peek at how the quilt would look when using a sea glass colorway. I have been tinkering around with the pattern for years. Originally, I created the design for a geese mini quilt swap I took part in back in 2017. What do you think of the pattern? How would you make it? If solids, what colors? If prints, what type? Modern or floral? Or maybe even a fishy print like those found in Rip Tide by Citrus & Mint Designs.

These are all questions that I ask myself and I end up wanting to make 100 different quilts. Oh, if I only had a little more time. LOL.

In my mind’s eye, when I see the pattern I see flowers cut out like snowflakes. That is actually something that others have seen in the snowflakes pattern. Wouldn’t it be great to see this pattern in Christmas fabric?? Like a soft grey so they actually look like snowflakes. It actually has a lot of possibilities. For instance, what if the flying geese triangles were the only color in the quilt?? And then, what if the outline of the hexi was the same color as the flower? I think it turns into a sand dollar. It’s incredibly easy for me to get lost in the possibilities.

The Terracotta Fiori Quilt

I used my favorite batting for the quilt, Hobbs Heirloom wool. The texture within the quilt is just so yummy. It makes something simple, like lines, look fabulous.

For that back, I added a punch with contrast by picking out a navy floral print. It is another one of Riley Blake Designs Basics, Painter’s Palette Posey. It has all the depth and texture of a painting. The blue, although dark, is still a part of the cool colors so it blends well with all the colors on the front of the quilt. I think it anchors the quilt and compliments it fully.

Paper Piecing

The Terracotta Fiori quilt pattern is a paper piecing pattern. So you don’t have to worry about creating perfect flying geese. The paper will help you get those perfect points. You might be fooled by the hexi design, but this quilt doesn’t have y-seams.

That’s right — not a single y-seam, unlike my YoYa or Stars in Pieces patterns. I do love y-seams, but they can be a little challenging.

Is It Quilt-Along Party Time?

I‘m thinking that this occasion might just call for a quilt-along party… Are you up for that?? Let me know in the comments. I love doing giveaways in November so maybe it can end in the second week of November… Hmmm… It’s been a while since I have done a sew-along and is on my list of things to do this year — so it might just be the perfect way to end 2021.

Put a reminder on your phone to check back here on September 17 so you can get your copy of the Terracotta Fiori quilt pattern. Have a wonderful week and I hope you get to squeeze some sewing in.

The Terracotta Fiori is beautiful!!! Like you, I too receive a peaceful and calm feeling while looking at it. It has a lot to do with your colors, they are gorgeous together. I may be able to join your quilt along. I am currently committed starting another quilt along in September but I would love to learn your paper piecing techniques. I would certainly love to make your quilt.

Thank you!! I am so happy you like the design and I would love to see how you would make it. That is my favorite part about making patterns, seeing other peoples interpretations of the design. I would love to have you in the Sew Alogn. Now all I need to do is decide on a timeline… Any suggestions?
