Sparkling Table Runner Tutorial

New Year’s is right around the corner. Meaning the end of the year is less than 20 days away. Since I will be spending New Year’s hunkered down at home (in my bubble), I decided it would be fun to create an easy and fun project. SO… my New Year’s gift to you is a tutorial on how to make this Sparkling Table Runner.

The Sparkling Table Runner features large flying geese made up of half square triangles. For me, it is the perfect icon for the transition from 2020 to 2021 because I can’t wait to get well into 2021. And back to some sense of normality. Why do I call it sparkling? Well, that is the name of fabric that I use in the flying geese. Metallic Rose Gold printed on white fabrics. It makes such a lovely and fabulous combo. Rose gold is very much my color crush and it has been so for the last four years. When I see the fabrics Blooms or Swiss dot fabric, it reminds me of champagne bubbles.

Sparkle is a Riley Blake Designs Basics fabric. I am really into metallic fabrics and rose gold so I can’t help but love these dazing fabrics. In this project I also use other RBD basics fabrics like Texture Shell and Coral in Cotton Confetti, my favorite solid on the market. I hope you enjoy this project!! I hope you have a safe and wonderful Christmas, plus an even better New Year’s. Let’s jump into the tutorial.

How to make this
Sparkling Table Runner

Make a total of the following 3 1/2″ squares:

34 – Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White Half Square Triangles (HST)
12 – Rose Gold on White HST / Texture Shell Half Square Triangles (HST)
54 – Texture Shell / Coral Confetti Cotton Half Square Triangles (HST)
24 – Full Texture Shell Squares

Use your favorite way to make the Half Square Triangles listed above. I made grids to make this process quick and easy. It is a little more complex so I will have to do a tutorial on just that at some point. An easy way to make half square triangles is to take two 4″ squares. On one of them, draw a diagonal line down the middle. Pin the two squares together and sew on both sides of the drawn line. Use the line as your cutting line. This will give you two Half Square Triangles (HSTs). Then trim down to a 3 1/2″ square, keeping the seam in the center. A great tool for trimming Half Square Triangles is the Bloc Loc ruler. I love mine!

There are three main parts to this table runner: Three Block 1s that are half Coral and half White fabric, one Block 2 that is all Rose Gold on White fabric and six wedges or half blocks that are all coral fabrics.

Making the wedge

Gather 6 half square triangles that are made with Texture Shell / Coral Confetti Cotton fabrics and 4 Texture Shell squares. Sew them into the following rows:

Row 1(3) HST with Texture Shell on top and left edge and (1) Texture Shell Square
Row 2(2) HST with Texture Shell on top and left edge and (1) Texture Shell Square
Row 3(1) HST with Texture Shell on top and left edge and (1) Texture Shell Square
Row 4(1) Texture Shell Square

Sew the four rows together to form a wedge or half a block. Repeat to make a total of six wedges.

Making Block 1

Gather 6 HSTs that are made with Texture Shell / Coral Confetti Cotton fabrics, 4 HSTs that are made with Rose Gold on White / Texture Shell fabrics, and 6 HSTs that are made with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White fabrics. Sew them into the following rows:

Row 1 (3) HSTs with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White and (1) HST Rose Gold on White / Texture Shell
Row 2 (2) HSTs with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White, (1) HST Rose Gold on White / Texture Shell and (1) HST Texture Shell / Coral Confetti Cotton
Row 3(1) HST with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold, (1) HST Rose Gold on White / Texture Shell and (2) HSTs Texture Shell / Coral Confetti Cotton
Row 4(1) HST Rose Gold on White / Texture Shell and (3) HSTs Texture Shell / Coral Confetti Cotton

Sew the four rows together to form a block that is half white and half coral. Repeat the process for a total of three Block 1s.

Making Block 2

Gather 16 HSTs that are made with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White fabrics. Sew them into the following rows:

Row 1 (4) HSTs with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White fabric
Row 2(4) HSTs with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White fabric
Row 3(4) HSTs with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White fabric
Row 4(4) HSTs with Rose Gold on White / Rose Gold on White fabric

Sew the four rows together to form a block that is all white.

Putting the table runner together

To form the table runner, we will be sewing the four blocks on point which is why we created wedges. They will be sewn in between the squares. Basically, they will create diagonal rows instead of traditional horizontal rows. Lay your table runner out. Pin a wedge to the left top edge of a square and then right bottom edge of the square.

Double check that it is correct. Sew them together. Repeat for a total of three. You will have two wedges, one Block 1, and one Block 2 left over. These will be used on the edges of the table runner. Pin and sew a wedge to the top left edge of Block 1. Pin and sew a wedge to the bottom right edge of Block 2. Sew the five diagonal rows together to form a table runner with pointed edges.

Trim the edges straight making sure to leave 1/4″ seam allowance. You can the points as a reference.

Spray baste your table runner to a piece of batting. Trim down.

Then place the backing fabric on top of the table runner right sides together. Above I have folded the back over you you can see that the two fabrics on the outside will face each other. Pin them together so you avoid shifting. Sew along the edges leaving a 3″ gap unsewn. Trim down.

Pull the table runner through the hole. Iron the table runner, work the edges so that they are full and not tucked in. Close the 3″ gap by tucking the edges into and ironing the folded edge. Topstitch close to the edge of the table runner, making sure you close the gap. Quilt as desired.

I am going to do some slow hand quilting on this one, so check my Instagram for my finished Sparkling Table Runner.

I did a second table runner to see what would happen if I added some coral to the flying geese. Which fabric combination do you like the most??
