Halloween Quilt – Costume Maker’s Ball

It’s that time of the year again, the sweet spot. A time when you can start a Halloween quilt and have plenty of time to finish it before the holiday is here. I love Halloween and all the things that come with it! I actually have a special basket where I store all my Halloween fabrics. This quilt will be the third Halloween quilt I have made (click here to see more Halloween projects), but that does not include Day of the Dead quilts. Yeah, I REALLY love Halloween fabrics. It might have something to do with the fact that it’s my birthday. This year, it has been such a delight to sew with J. Wecker Frisch‘s new line called Costume Maker’s Ball. She created it for Riley Blake Designs. It is absolutely adorable and packed with whimsical fabrics, spooky characters laid out in panels for blocks and borders, and it even has a predesigned home decor project.

The line reminds me of vintage folk art. What’s my favorite? It has to be the webs. It features a needle in it, making it seem like the web is made out of thread. Then there is the strip fabric that has the measuring lines of a ruler. The perfect mixer fabric. I can’t forget to mention the ticket fabric. J. Wecker Frisch has a great eye for typography. It’s really hard to choose a favorite, all of the fabrics are so good.

Gingham Girls Stars Quilt Pattern

When I was brainstorming on what I might make with the Costume Maker’s Ball fabric line, my head spun around on all of the possibilities. I found myself on a website called Diary of a Quilter; it’s the blog from Amy Smart and fell in love with her pattern called Gingham Girls Stars. I am a sucker for star blocks and gingham fabric, making this quilt perfect for me and these spooky fabrics. What do you think?? I actually found the perfect yellow and orange gingham fabric for the backing and border of the quilt. It is a larger gingham, making it a fun and unusual combination.

One of my favorite panels in the Costume Maker’s Ball fabric line is the Medium Patch Cream Panel. It is composed of 10 different blocks of art laid out in two sizes. When I ordered it, I wasn’t sure what I would use it for but knew that it would be the perfect focal point to any project. When I saw it, I instantly thought I had to use it on the back of the quilt. I turned six of the blocks into courthouse step blocks, a design that I am obsessed with right now. Don’t you just love how it turned out? One of these blocks went on the front of the quilt and the other five in the middle strip on the back of the quilt, alternating the top and bottom of the block making it fun, playful, and nondirectional.

Quilting The Halloween Quilt

I decided to try out quilting in a grid because I have never tried it before. Since the lines would be sewn in two different directions, from top to bottom and from right edge to left edge, I increased the spacing in between the lines to three inches. In the past with one direction straight line quilting I have had a one inch space between lines. I feel like the grid echoes the squares of the blocks, sashing, and gingham making it the perfect fit for this Halloween Quilt.

Win a Panel Block

Okay, I have a few blocks of the panel left over and will give one block to a few of you lucky readers. So click here and head over to my Instagram photo and tell me what you would make with the block if you got one. You can find Costume Maker’s Ball for sale at your LQS. I would love to see what you make with it, so tag me in your photos and don’t forget to tag the fabric line, too. #costumemakerball #RileyBlakeDesigns #jweckerfrisch
