The Fan-tastic Quilt and Pattern

Something that I cannot believe is that through all of my years of quilting, I have never made a Fourth of July quilt. It has been on my list of things to do. My Aunt Dourthy has star quilt that I adore!! I have always wanted to create something like it. Actually I bought a pattern with stars and stripes many years ago. Somehow the project has been pushed aside. But let me tell you, when I saw this line of red, white, and blues, I was inspired to create something fun and I knew that it had to be my Fan-tasic quilt.

These fabrics designed by Echo Park Paper are called Celebrate America. Riley Blake Designs always has the best designs and this collection takes the cupcake! I am a sucker for stars and there are so many shapes and sizes of them. It’s packed with flags, quotes, and pinwheels. My favorite print, Celebrate America Icons in blue, is full of nostalgia. It takes me back to funky outfits with star sunglasses and watching fireworks with delight while eating popsicles. So many memories in this wonderful country. I am truly “Proud to be an American”(yes I am quoting the fabric). I love everything about the Fourth of July and these fabrics.

The Fan-tasic quilt

Originally, I created this pattern for an online publication called Quilt Pattern Magazine. Today I am re-releasing it under my personal pattern line. Dun Dun Dun. Do you know what that means?? Party! Let’s get a head start on celebrating the Fourth of July with this giveaway! But let’s talk about that later. Do you know what the best part about this Fan-tasic quilt pattern is? You get three quilt sizes in two different quilt designs, equaling instructions for six quilts. It is a great project for a beginner quilter, and the top can be made over a weekend. The pattern includes two templates to help you trim your building block. I have fallen in love with templates because they are so easy to use. All you have to do print them on paper and cut them out. They can shift, but I have come up with the perfect solution, which is putting a little glue on the back side of the template. And voilà!! You get exactly what you need.

The Quilting

I quilted the quilt with straight lines made on my domestic machine using a walking foot. It’s fast and modern. I think it compliments the spinning fans perfectly. Do you see that there are two sizes of fans? Super fun! I kind of feel like quilting lines can working with just about any quilt design. What do you think? What is your favorite thing to quilt on a quilt?

Some of my favorite Fourth of Julys have been spent with my best friend Mindy. Whether it was Las Cruces, NM; El Paso, TX; Washington, D.C.; or Virginia, she always makes a good time better. I know we still have a few months before the holiday, but I wanted to be the first one to wish you have happy Fourth of July. Let’s get to the giveaway info.
