I am so excited to present to you my scrappy chevron quilt and pattern!!! It is another pattern release party day! Here I talk about the quilt, pattern, fabric, and giveaway. Yes, I said giveaway, so let’s start the party!

Aron's Chevron Quilt

Aron’s Chevron Quilt

The idea for this quilt came to me more than a year ago when I had a Moda scrap bag. As I thought about what I could create with the scrap bag, I kept coming back to a chevron. Something that I had always wanted to make but up until that point had never made. (Now I am working on my third chevron quilt.) I submitted this design to the Moda Bake Shop and it was accepted, but when the box of fabric arrived I didn’t find a scrap bag, instead there was a layered cake. I used this to my advantage and designed three different quilts around the layered cake. These quilts are my windmill quilt series. (Old Fashioned Windmill QuiltHi-Tech Windmill Quilt and mix of the two).

I held onto my scrappy chevron for a later pattern. There are so many different ways to make them and my pattern is one that you can pull from your stash to create, something I like to call a stash buster. I love this quilt because it calls for fat quarters, something that I keep accumulating. It is an easy pattern that a beginner could make. As long as you keep the half square triangle seam in the center of your 9.25” square, you don’t have any major seams to worry about matching. With this pattern, you have the ability to choose from a queen size or a lap size. I personally love lap size quilts because they fit perfectly on the foot of my queen size bed and they are easier to quilt.

The Fabric

To make this quilt, I pulled my fabrics from a Christmas collection by Kate Spain for Moda. I found it at my LQS here in Tucson. Kate Spain is a bold, fresh, and colorful designer. I always LOVE her fabric lines. This one is called Merry Merry. It’s adorable! The pomegranates are such a smart and original addition to a Christmas fabric and the bird is so cute, too. The colors are perfect especially the grey. I selected eight of the designs from her collection to use in this lap size quilt.

The Quilting

Guess what?? This quilting was done by me and I did it on my domestic machine. In the past, I have had a hard time developing my machine quilting skills. Luckily, my sister lets me use her long arm, but now that I moved it’s a little bit harder for me to be able to use it. I am accumulating a pile of quilts I need to get quilted. That is why this year I have focused on machine quilting. It is the third one that I quilted this year and my best work yet. I have to say that the very first quilt that I experimented with my Bernina (BSR) foot ended up being a baby quilt for a friend. The quilting on that looked like a four year old’s scribbling. But done is better than perfect, and working through something is the only way to learn, to get better. I waited years before I tried again. Earlier this year I took a class at my LQS. I had a eureka moment, finally figuring out how to use my BSR foot correctly.
